johnny smith/what are you doing the rest of your life (1984)
johnny smith/my romance/little girl blue (rodgers & hart, 1962)
peggy lee/everything must change (1981)
peggy lee/frank sinatra/nice work if you can get it
two fabulous versions of the second time around , a great sammy cahn/jimmy van heusen song (les films d'occasion productions) the first one is a 1961 version by miss peggy lee, a track from live at basin street east, that was in fact recorded in studio. the second version is from a frank sinatra's very rare recording of a 1962 london concert ... now choosing between these two versions is really impossible, isn't it?

1. masterpiece in classic singing ... and one of the very best performances ever of tony bennett, from what i consider his most perfect, most radical, most beautiful record: the tony bennett/bill evans album.
2. now i would have loved to compare it with one of the songs from don't look back, a fabulous album by the very much underrated david allyn, with barry harris on piano, unfortunatly i only have the lp and no way to post anything (if somebody has the lp , and knows how to post from it , it would be great ....)
3. the reason i'd love to show people interested in the art of singing the incredible similarities between these two albums, is because i now believe, after some research, that tony bennett was highly influenced by david allyn when he recorded his album (his two albums in fact) with bill evans
4. tony bennett was a great admirer (and a friend, i believe) of david allyn ... and most important are the dates of the recording sessions: david allyn's was on february 27/28, 1975 ... whereas tony bennett's sessions started four months later on june 10, 12, 13, 1975 ...
tony bennett/bill evans/young and foolish PS: an orchestrated song by david allyn, just to compare the two voices
david allyn/long ago and far away
blossom dearie/it might as well be spring, version française
mel tormé/george shearing/it might as well be spring
dick haymes/it might as well be spring (1955)

how can anybody choose between these three immaculate versions of violets for your furs?
you first get two live versions, shirley horn's and frank sinatra's ... and when you think you've reached perfection ... then comes billie holidays' version (from lady in satin)
shirley horn (1981)/frank sinatra (1957)/violets for your furs
billie holiday/violet for your furs (1958)
(there's) no disappointment in heaven is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written, a love song dedicated to afterlife: deux versions, la première par bob wills et ses texas playboys (tommy duncan est le chanteur), la seconde par les idoles des everly brothers, les blue sky boys
bob wills (and tommy duncan)/the blue sky boys/ no disappointment in heaven (les films d'occasion production) BONUS: une version tardive (1964) de no disappointment in heaven, la chanson favorite de bob wills, qu'il chante lui-même de sa vieille voix usée ...
bob wills/no disappointment in heaven (1964)
frank sinatra/the same old dream (1947)
mardi 7 octobre 2008
he gets more surprising each year, stranger, younger ... il y a quatre ans, dylan rendait hommage à la plus célèbre chanson de sam cooke, a change is gonna come, inspirée par blowin' in the wind, et un an plus tôt, pour un obscur film sur la guerre de sécession, gods and generals, il était plus lyrique encore .... this song, too, is included in the forthcoming bootleg, volume 8....
bob dylan/a change is gonna come (apollo theater, 2004)
bob dylan/across the green mountains/2003
this is where it all came from: mixed up confusion, drugs, alcohool, raw poetry, bad temper, bad judgment, good judgment, mauvaise foi, faith in no one but himself ..... and raw musicality, raw electricity, raw feelings, bad singing, great art ..... bob dylan/positively 4th street (sydney, australia, 1966)
coming from the same 1994 david bromberg sessions as catskill serenade, here's a heartbreaking vaudeville version of a great jimmie rodgers tune ......
bob dylan/miss the mississippi and you
bob dylan/mississippi (outtake)
dimanche 28 septembre 2008
et voici le retour du chef d'oeuvre des chefs d'oeuvre, the hi lo's plus one, c'est à dire les harmonies mortelles des hi lo's auxquellles s'ajoutent la voix ... la voix .... la voix ..... the voice ... frank sinatra ... what else is there to say, hey?
the hi lo's ... plus frank sinatra
c'était quoi le cinéma déjà? et si c'était ça, juste ça (john ford, bob dylan, allan dwan...)?
jimmie rodgers/waiting for a train (1930)
the return of the two greatest voices of show business: sheer pleasure and professionalism ....
frank sinatra/peggy lee/nice work if you can get it (gershwin)
frank sinatra, bill miller/someone to watch over me/september song
frank sinatra, bill miller/try a little tenderness/this love of mine
vendredi 19 septembre 2008
l'adieu à dityvon .....
adieu petit corbeau
introducing the one and only floyd tillman, one of the greatest country and western stylists of all time, and perhaps the greatest single influence on another great stylist, willie nelson ....(please check the incredible box set BEAR FAMILY issued a couple of years ago ....)
floyd tillman/slippin' around (1949)
if i had known then, i would have spent most of 2000 following dylan around like a little dog (in fact, i would have loved to be dylan's dog eight or nine years go ....)
bob dylan/thingshave changed (birmingham, 2000)
vendredi 12 septembre 2008
from inside country music's most obscure archives, a rare treasure: a david bromberg song, incredibly dylanized by bobby z.
bob dylan/catskill serenade (1994)
two of the greatest yodelers (les films d'occasion production)
hank williams/i'm so lonesome i could cry (live radio, 1949)
ethel waters/you're a sweetheart (1938)
lee wiley/you're a sweetheart (1958) ... from west of the moon, her best album.... BONUS. a young lee wiley sings.... the very same song ... with her thin young voice ....
lee wiley / you're a sweetheart (+ born to dream ,radio, 1936)

hey louie louie ... why did you suddenly decide to stop writing in english?
you'd have to ask first: why did you start writing this blog in english IN THE FIRST PLACE? ... let's say i made a mistake... let's say i supposed the "english speaking lovers of music" were more serious, more sensitive, more educated .. than the stupid french crowd .... but the english speaking crowd can't all be peter guralnicks, can they? that's why i've come back to the french speaking morons who used to worship every damn word i wrote in a stupid french daily ...(the english and american crowd can still find me and my clips of old songs on youtube, some of you apparently have found that already, as i have more reactions to my posts there .. than on my blog)
voici la version sentimentale d'une belle chanson oubliée de gordon lightfoot: quand dylan se fait crooner (lay lady lay, you belong to me,tonight i'll be staying here with you, floater ....), sa suavité est d'une douceur et d'une fragilité immaculées....
bob dylan/i'm not supposed to care (1998)
at long last, le retour du monde enchanté de harry nilsson .... peut-être la plus belle chose au monde -un monde pop évidemment- que cet extrait (i'm always chasing rainbows, i wonder who's kissing her now, what'll i do) du concert bbc de nilsson et gordon jenkins, reproduction en direct de leur chef d'oeuvre sur disque
nilsson/jenkins/a little schmilsson in the night

dick haymes/maureen o' hara/moonlight propaganda (1946) this clip is from the film do you love me, directed by gregory ratoff (st petersbourg, 1897-suisse, 1960), the same gregory ratoff who played max fabian, the russian accent impresario in all about eve only two or three years later ...
at forty years distance (1931, 1971), , two absolute cult heroes of mine, the first one a black blues singer, the second one a white country rebel (produced by the great kinky friedman on his sphincter records label) produce these strange haunting sounds ...

HERE COME THE THREE KINGS OF VAUDEVILLE ... Blackface/Whiteface
WHITE/WHITE bob dylan/just like a woman/knockin' on heaven's door (renaldo and clara, 1975)
WHITE/BLACK emmett miller/sweet mama (papa's getting mad,1929)
emmett miller's only screen appearance (he's on the right)
BLACK/BLACK bert williams/the mississippi stoker (1906) ... AND HERE'S THE QUEEN OF VAUDEVILLE ...
louis armstrong/SHINE (1930), one of the best examples of BLACK MINSTREL VAUDEVILLE PARODY (he's at the same time a blackminstrel and a transgenre queen)... C'EST QUOI UN BLACK MINSTREL? voyez ces images sublimes d'évidence sensuelle et théorique à la fois, où un très jeune armstrong joue au BLACK MINSTREL et au TRAVESTI: no use quoting nick tosches or jacques lacan, all is here: this is black minstrelsy in itself, as well as "travestissement" and queer theory...
White is white, c’est ça ? Oui. A special kind of white. A whiter shade of pale.
bob dylan/where teardrops fall ('2001)
bob dylan/billy 4
terry allen/what of alicia? (extrait du merveilleux juarez)
bob dylan/tomorrow is a long time
dimanche 6 juillet 2008
beverly kenney//isn't it a pity? (gershwin, 1958)
johnny hartman/what's to become of me? (1947) very early recording, already a masterpiece
beverly kenney/born to be blue (1958) somewhere between a young blossom dearie and an even younger billie holiday ...
beverly kenney/where can i go (1958), paroles de peggy lee
FOUR OR FIVE VERSIONS OF A GREAT SONG (FOR ALL WE KNOW)
beverly kenney/for all we know
nat king cole trio/for all we know (1949)

...and two versions of for all we know (1957/1956) by the ...
the four freshmen/for all we know
BONUS BEVERLY KENNEY
beverly kenney/yours sincerely (1952) earliest of recording of beverly kenney available, apparently for radio use (she was barely 20)
beverly kenney/a foggy day in london town (1954)
an early demo, she was just 22 ..... beverly kenney has become my favourite singer, insensiblement, sans même que je m'en aperçoive ... i can't seem to live without her, je connaissais à peine son nom, elle ne me quitte plus ... eternelle jeunesse, perfect pitch, ensorcellement assuré, quelque part entre billie holiday et allison statton ... beverly kenney a fait six disques, très durs à trouver (très chers plutôt, ils viennent du japon), et deux inédits publiés récemment, plus de quarante ans après sa mort ... elle s'est suicidée en 1960
bob dylan/visions of johanna (melbourne 1966)
it's supposed to be one of his worst singing years, and then you hear this slow, fantastic, hurting version of tears of rage, and you don't know where you are, do you mister jones?
bob dylan/tears of rage (birmingham, 1995)
frank sinatra/peggy lee/nice work if you can get it (1962)
peggy lee/i had a love once (harold arlen) (1988)/les films d'occasion
CLASSIC CAJUN ... ... ...

harry choates (violin)/johnnie ruth manuel (vocal)/missing you (1947)
frank sinatra's very first appearence on screen (with the pied pipers and tommy dorsey/trombone )/is this perfection?
frank sinatra /i'll never smile again (1941)
is bob dylan really singing these days? what kind of a non-melody is this? (but the sound is good, and he even smiles ...)
bob dylan/just like tom thumb's blues (madrid, july 6, 2008)
la très méconnue lucy reed/inchworm (1955), with bill evans on piano (his very first recording) this delicate and haunting song, inchworm, was written by the great frank loesser (it's a children's lullaby), and it was its author's favourite composition...
dick haymes/if i should lose you (1957)
charlie parker (with strings)/if i should lose you (1947)
jeri southern/two sleepy people (hoagy carmichael/frank loesser), johnny smith on guitar, 1956 JERI SOUTHERN SINGING PAUL BOWLES
here's to a great mysterious lady singer, johnnie ruth manuel, a beautiful woman who sang with the legendary harry choates (new iberia, louisiana, 1922-austin, texas, 1951), and with whom choates had an illegitimate affair (she was married to one of his best friends, a regular musician in his orchestra)
johnnie ruth manuel (vocal)/harry choates (violin) /missing you (les films d'occasion production)/i could not find a single photograph of johnnie ruth manuel on google but there's a beautiful one in bear family's fabulous harry choates double cd, "devil in the bayou", a must for louisiana and cajun music fanatics ...
two minimalist productions by the great underrated bobby troup: first the forgotten joanie sommers, standing here as a julie london "doublure" ... then the great bobby troup himself ...
joanie sommers/i'll close my eyes/cherokee
bobby troup/their hearts were full of spring (les films d'occasion production) ..... et un délicieux post scriptum, musicalement aussi cristallin, aussi minimaliste, en forme de réponse à cette question obsédante: c'était quoi déjà le cinéma? ici, c'est blossom dearie/audrey hepburn sur des images de blake edwards (breakfast at tiffany's, évidemment)
blossom dearie/audrey hepburn/(+ george peppard)/ try your wings
young bob dylan was deeply in love with beautiful mimi farina, joan baez's sister, and you can say he was also in love with richard farina (love, admiration, jalousy, who can tell?), a young man of great talent, who lived just as he, bob dylan, wished he would had lived: live fast, die young (of a motorcycle accident, of course) just after publishing a real novel, a novel of great beauty, been down so long it looks like up to me, a novel of such a litterary quality dylan's tarentulas or chronicles, volume one, would never never reach
mimi and richard farina (+ pete seeger) /house un-american blues activity dream (26 février 1966)/quelques mois plus tard (mai 1966), dick farina se tue dans un accident de moto, quelques jours à peine après la sortie de son livre/deux mois plus tard, dylan ne réussit même pas à se tuer dans un accident de moto ... ni à sortir son livre (il avait essayé de battre dick farina à la corde en signant un contrat avant lui par pure jalousie, dès qu'il avait su que farina avait terminé son roman, mais bob se révéla incapable d'écrire un livre) / so who won? who lost? and what kind of a gamble was it?

bob dylan/tryin' to get to heaven/5 octobre 2000, wembley arena i know i said repeatedly that dylan's concerts have been terrible most of the time since his 1966 motorcycle accident, but when he's good, he's incredibly good ...this is ever so beautiful: incrediblibly delicate and poetic, better than the cardiff version of the same year, and even better than the studio version (time out of mind, 1997)...

bob dylan/sugar baby/glasgow, 2001 one of dylan's most perfect and delicate songs, sung ever so sweetly only a couple of months after he had recorded it for love and theft (notice how the dean martin influence mixes with emmett miller's old time minstrel style)
hey louis, don't tell me you like ella now ...
ella fitzgerald/but not for me (1950), ellis larkins on piano i've changed my mind over the years: in two fabulous records, one with the the great ellis larkins on piano (pure ella, 1950/1954) and the intimate ella (with pianist paul smith, in 1960), she just sings classic ballads and she's as good as billie holiday or sarah vaughan .. or frank sinatra.
david allyn/long ago and far away (1959) words by ira gershwin, music by jerome kern (rappeler que david allyn a commencé dans l'orchestre de boyd raeburn)
reverend louis overstreet/working on the building (1960, arhoolie)
bob dylan/tell me that it isn't true (rochester, 2000) another of those great funny rocking numbers from year 2000 (year one, as far as dylan is concerned), fabulous version of a light country song from NASHVILLE SKYLINE
staples singers/uncloudy day (1956) perfection of christian prayer, coupled with pops staples' charlie patton guitar with african echoes
pierre pinchik (ex cantor of leningrad, 1936) perfection of greatest hazan's voice and angelic jewish prayer
as far as music goes -be it jazz, blues, rock, pop-, i've never needed anybody's help in any way. it's been more complicated with soul music, country music ... ... ...and with the infinite variety of jazz singers and crooners.two persons have helped me on the way. the best writer on country music and soul music has always been peter guralnick (he's also the best on sam cooke, and he'll be soon the greatest authority ... on sam philips). he's taught me a lot. all that peter guralnick loves, i have come to love and respect. there's not much i love that he doesn't love himself. the best writer on jazz singing is will friedwald (the expression "jazz singing" is used because i haven't found any better one, but i could have called it light jazz, crooning, whatever ....) all that i did not find out by myself on al bowlly, whispering jack smith, billie holiday, dean martin, dick haymes ... ... .... or frank sinatra, i have to admit i learnt from him, from his books and liner notes to be precise. all that he loves, i have come to love and respect. without him, i may have ignored the great singing of jack teagarden, david allyn, mildred bailey, ukulele ike, connee boswell, ... .... ... or the only good ella fitzgerald record, let no man write my epitaph (now known as "the intimate ella") but will friedwald has a problem: he only loves "strong" styles, and "big" voices, this is why he despises such great artists as sylvia syms, beverly kenney, jeri southern, irene kral, shirley horn, blossom dearie, or bobby troup. he doesn't seem to know that less is more. here's to bobby troup.
bobby troup/their hearts were full of spring (1958)
